Completion of the following curriculum will satisfy the requirements for an Associate in Arts degree at KCTCS and related baccalaureate COMMUNICATION degree at University of Kentucky. This pathway meets the general education, pre-major, and program requirements.

The suggested courses in this pathway leads to an Associate and Baccalaureate major. Pre-Transfer Notes

Completion of the following curriculum will satisfy both the requirements for an Associate in Arts degree at KCTCS institutions as well as the UK Core requirements for the University of Kentucky and some of the pre-major requirements for the College of Communication’s Bachelor of Arts in Communication.

The College of Communications is a selective admission college. Students must maintain at least a 2.6 overall GPA and a 3.0 GPA in the pre-major courses: COM 101, 252, 249, ENG 101 and 102, and Oral Communications.

If the student elects to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Communication or chooses Option B under the Bachelor of Arts, the foreign language courses will not be required. In this scenario, the student will need to work with their academic advisor to find suitable course replacements in order to satisfy the requirements of the associate’s degree.

Students must complete fifteen hours in courses related to a Career Path at 300-level or above at UK, as approved by the student’s academic advisor. 300-level courses often have prerequisites, so you will need to make sure you take the prerequisite courses prior to enrolling in the 300-level course at UK (e.g., SOC 340 Community Interaction requires SOC 101 as a prerequisite).

Suggested Cognate areas for various tracks include:
Business and Organizational Communication: SOC, MKT, MGT and JOU
Health Communication: SOC, PSY, PHI, JOU, MKT and MGT
Human Communication: SOC, PS, JOU, MKT and MGT
Digital and Mass Communication: SOC, PS, JOU, MKT and MGT

KCTCS students planning to transfer to the University of Kentucky should work closely with their academic and transfer advisors each semester to ensure they are addressing both KCTCS and UK requirements.

Additional KCTCS Graduation Requirements

1. Completion of minimum of 60 credit hours,
2. Minimum cumulative 2.0 GPA,
3. Minimum of 15 credit hours earned at the institution awarding the degree,
4. Cultural studies course, (Refer to the KCTCS catalog.)
5. Demonstration of computer/digital literacy, (Refer to the KCTCS catalog.)
6. One science course must include a laboratory experience, and
7. Two disciplines must be represented in Social & Behavioral Science courses and must be different than those in the Heritage and Humanities categories.
